Before you read a single section of these pages, I want to talk to you about how to use it.
Because this is not a blog you read the way you read most things. You do not open it on a Tuesday morning with your coffee and scroll through it the way you scroll through everything else. You do not skim it. You do not read it once and move on. And you absolutely do not read it in one sitting and expect to come out the other side healed and ready for whatever comes next.
This blog is a journey. And like all journeys it requires some preparation before you begin.
What you are about to read is organised into sections — narrative chapters that tell the story of my journey loving an addict across more than two decades — and thematic posts that sit alongside those sections and give you the language, the tools, and the frameworks to understand your own story through the lens of mine. Every section and every thematic post has a companion printable — a worksheet or reflection sheet that is designed to be worked through rather than just read. Not all posts and workbooks are uploaded / available as yet – they are still a work in progress.
The workbooks are not optional extras. They are where the real work happens. Reading about grief without sitting with your own grief does not heal anything. Reading about resentment without naming your own resentments does not release them. The posts give you the understanding. The workbooks give you the experience. Both are necessary.
Here is how I suggest you use what you find here.
READ ONE SECTION AT A TIME
Do not rush through the sections. Each one covers significant emotional territory and deserves to be given the time it takes to land properly. Read a section. Sit with it. Notice what it brings up in you. Come back to it if you need to before you move on.
Not every section will be relevant to your specific journey. Some of you will recognise your story completely in the early addiction chapters. Some of you will find the affair content most resonant. Some of you will skip whole sections because they do not map to your experience — and that is completely okay. This is not a book you are required to read from cover to cover in order. It is a resource you move through in the way that serves your healing best.
READ THE THEMATIC POSTS THAT BELONG WITH EACH SECTION
Each section has thematic posts that sit alongside it. These posts take the experiences described in the section and unpack them — giving you language, frameworks, and perspectives that help you understand not just what happened in my story but what might be happening in yours.
Again — not every thematic will be relevant. Some will land immediately and some will not land at all, and some will land weeks after you first read them when something in your life suddenly makes the content click. All of that is okay. Come back to the ones that need more time. The blog is not going anywhere.
WORK THROUGH THE Workbooks
I cannot say this strongly enough. The workbooks are where the healing happens.
Each printable is designed to be worked through slowly and honestly. Not performed. Not filled in quickly so you can say you did it. Sat with. Returned to. Written in as honestly as you can manage even when honest is uncomfortable — especially when honest is uncomfortable.
You will need a journal or a notebook alongside this blog. Something private. Something that is entirely yours. The workbooks can be downloaded and filled, or printed, or they can be copied into your journal by hand. Either works. What matters is that you actually do them rather than just reading them and moving on.
PACE YOURSELF
This content is heavy. It is honest in ways that will sometimes be difficult to sit with — not because I have written it to be difficult, but because the truth of this journey is difficult and I have not softened it for your comfort.
When something you read stops you — when something lands in a place that needs time before you can move past it — stop. Put the blog down. Give yourself the time you need. Come back when you are ready. There is absolutely no timeline on this. Healing is not a race and this blog is not going anywhere.
Some of you will move through it quickly. Some of you will take months. Some of you will read one post and need to put it down for a week before you can emotionally come back. All of those are right. All of those are just the honest reality of processing something that genuinely hurt you – this is the true reflection of the Honest Side of Healing, the peace happens by pieces.
USE THE DAILY TOOLS THROUGHOUT
Before you begin the sections I encourage you to download and begin using the daily tools provided in this blog. The daily check-in sheet, the gratitude journal, the healing journal prompts. These are not section-specific — they are tools for every day of this journey regardless of where you are in the content. Starting them now means you have a daily practice of reflection and self care running alongside the deeper work of the sections and thematics. These 3 workbooks, I am gifting to subscribers to kickstart your journey.
A NOTE ON TRIGGERS
Some of what you are about to read will trigger you. Specific posts, specific passages, specific moments in the story that connect directly to specific moments in yours. When this happens the most important thing you can do is not push through it.
Stop. Breathe. Acknowledge that the trigger is information — it is pointing to something that needs attention and care. Step away from the blog for as long as you need to. Do something that grounds you. And when you come back — if the printable for that section is available — that is where to start. Let the worksheet give you a safe structure for processing what the trigger surfaced.
You are not broken because something triggered you. You are a human being whose nervous system is responding to something real.
FINALLY — THIS IS YOUR JOURNEY
My story is the vehicle. Your healing is the destination.
What I share in these pages is my experience, my perspective, my truth. It will not map perfectly to yours. Some of it will resonate so completely that you will feel I was writing directly to you. Some of it will not fit your situation at all. Take what helps. Leave what does not. And always — always — trust your own experience over mine.
You know your story better than anyone. This blog is here to give you language and community and tools and the knowledge that you are not alone. What you do with all of that is entirely, completely, beautifully yours.
