My name is Sloane.
That is not my real name.
I am a woman who spent decades loving someone who was not always able to love me back the way I deserved.
I am a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a survivor – and someone who has spent a very long time picking up pieces — my own, and others’.
I am not a therapist. I am not a counsellor. I do not have letters after my name or a clinical framework to offer you. What I have is something different — I have lived this. Every word on these pages comes from inside the experience, not from the outside looking in.
I started Peace by Piece because the idea nagged at me for years and I kept allowing people to talk me out of it. Their first question was always how will you make money. My first question was always how many people are suffering alone right now who do not have to be.
These pages are my answer to that question.
If you are here because you love an addict or someone you probably shouldn’t – or you used to, or you are trying to figure out what the last few years of your life actually were — you are in exactly the right place.
Pull up a chair.
I have been expecting you.
For a long time I thought strength looked like endurance. I learned how to keep going when life became complicated. When addiction entered my relationship. When trust fractured. When I found myself carrying more than I ever thought I could.
Somewhere along the way, my light dimmed. Not all at once. Not dramatically. Just little by little, a piece here, a piece there. The kind of dimming that happens when you are constantly surviving, constantly adapting, constantly putting everyone else’s needs before your own.
But looking back now I can see something clearly that I could not see then.
I never truly lost who I was.
Beneath the exhaustion, I was still compassionate.
Beneath the heartbreak, I was still hopeful.
Beneath the fear, I was still brave.
Beneath the disappointment, I was still capable of love.
The woman I thought I had lost was there all along, waiting patiently beneath the layers life had placed upon her.
These pages are not the story of a woman who was broken and fixed. They are the story of a woman who remembered herself.
And slowly, through healing, growth, hard lessons, and unexpected moments of grace, my light found its way back. People who have known me for years have told me that my light is back. That is the greatest compliment anyone has ever paid me. Because I worked for it. Quietly, privately, and with everything I had.
If you are here because your own light feels a little dimmer than it once did — I want you to know something important.
The very best parts of who you are are rarely lost. Sometimes they are simply waiting to be found again.
Thank you for stopping by and wanting to know who I am. Let’s begin.

The Honest Side of Healing — The Looking Glass

For the ones who loved them through it. If you have found your way here, I am both grateful and sorry. Grateful because it means you are seeking something — understanding, healing, a hand to hold in the dark – and my hope is that you find it here. Sorry, because finding yourself here means…

Before him – Who I was

My childhood does not fit the narrative the psychology world would have you believe. You do not have to come from a broken home, a bad neighbourhood, or a damaged family to find yourself loving an addict. I am proof of that. My parents divorced when I was too small to even remember. Both my…
